THE DANCE CLASSES offered are the following: >> Sevillanas
The Pena's long term goal is to offer ongoing flamenco dance courses throughout the year. Unfortunately, this is not currently possible as esteemed flamenco dance instructors are living abroad to perfect their skill and live their art and passion in their everyday life. Given the current situation, who could blame them? So instead we are organising regular flamenco dance workshops taught by professors temporarily staying in Lebanon.
Currently we will be inviting Yalda Younes who lives and works in Paris to instruct classes. She has dedicated herself to flamenco dance for more than twelve years, has studied flamenco in Lebanon with Maria Jesus de Melero as well as in Spain with the masters, including Israel Galvan who remains her favorite. Yalda travels to Lebanon every two months on average, and each time she offers a workshop on a delimited 'palc'. With time, she has formed an important number of dancers and continues with the same tenacity and courage to teach beginners as well.
We have also had the pleasure of participating in Lorie Bagdassarian's workshops, a very talented young bailaora, born in France of Lebanese parents of Armenian descent. Lorie has studied flamenco since the age of 15, and lives and works at Jerez de la Frontera, in Spain.
We have also welcomed Tony Bejjani, a very promising young dancer who previously belonged to the Caracalla dance company, and has also fallen in love with Flamenco. For the past 6 years, he lived, studied and danced in Seville, Spain.
Another one of our flamenco teachers and dancers is Vathec Salmane.I met Vathec in September 2007, in Damascus, during the flamenco workshop given by Virginia Pozo, the famous Spanish dancer. I have been really impressed by his talent, his energy, and his strong will to cooperate with us in the flamenco field. He suggested that we organize flamenco workshops and I said yes immediatly, and i must say it was awsome! Vathec is the leader of "Grupo Compas", a flamenco dance company that features him and his 2 young sisters Salma and Nour. We hope to very soon work with Penas in foreign countries, in Spain or elsewhere, and also regularly offer workshops.
To meet the growing demand, we have recently started offering Salsa, ballroom dancing, Chachacha and Tango from Argentina. Our professors, Stephan Roukos, is an excellent dancer who is introducing us to the art of Latino dances. |
